District Profile

The Castro Valley Unified School District is built on a strong foundation of parent support, community involvement, a dedicated staff, and quality instructional programs with high expectations for student achievement based on clear district standards. This has resulted in our students achieving among the highest in the state. In addition, District schools and staff have been recognized in a variety of ways:

  • One of the 25 best schools in the Bay Area;
  • Castro Valley listed as one of only five “Bay Area Sweet Spots” because of its great schools and housing market.
  • Canyon Middle School re-designated as one of only 20 schools on the CA Schools to Watch List;
  • Castro Valley Elementary, Marshall and Palomares Elementary Schools designated as 2016 Gold Ribbon Schools;
  • Castro Valley Elementary and Marshal Elementary Schools received 2016 Title I Academic Achievement Awards;
  • Chabot, Independent, Jensen Ranch, Palomares, and Vannoy Elementary Schools were recognized as California Distinguished Schools for meeting California academic achievement targets;
  • Redwood High School was named a California Model Continuation High School;
  • Redwood and Castro Valley High Schools and Castro Valley Adult & Career Education received full terms of accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC);
  • Eight schools were recognized as Honor Roll Schools by California Business for Education Excellence for their academic achievement;
  • Thirteen schools were named Green Ribbon Schools by the Castro Valley Sanitary District for their recycling efforts.


Community support assists the District in the enhancement and expansion of our school facilities. In addition, the District has the support of three outstanding foundations, each with a particular emphasis:

  • The Castro Valley Educational Foundation promotes excellence in the education of the students of Castro Valley.
  • The Castro Valley Sports Foundation has been an advocate for a new stadium at CVHS and remains a strong supporter for additional athletic facility improvements.
  • The Castro Valley Arts Foundation advocates for arts education and provides necessary funding to enhance the operations and equipping of the new Center for the Arts.
