School Site Council

Role of School Site Council at Indy:
The school site council (SSC) is an elected group of parents, teachers and additional school employees. The primary goal of the SSC is to work with the principal to develop, recommend for approval, monitor, evaluate, and update the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). The members of the SSC council have been elected by their peers. For example, parents have elected the parent representatives and teachers have elected teachers. Members are elected to a 2-year term. The Indy SSC meets every 3-5 weeks. Meetings are open to the public. Meeting dates, agendas, and locations are posted
at least 72 hours in advance and are posted in the gazette,
marquee, and school website.

2018 Goals for the Indy SSC

  • Monthly Meetings that are open to the public

  • Establish Bylaws (completed Feb 2018)

  • Approve the Comprehensive School Safety Plan (completed Feb 2018)

  • Facilitate the development of and ratify the SPSA (Target completion date = Jun 2018)

What Is the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and Why Is it Important? Each year Independent Elementary is responsible for establishing the SPSA for the next school year. It is crucial that by June 2018 a SPSA be approved for implementation in the 2018-2019 school year. The purpose of the SPSA is to coordinate all educational services to create a cycle of continuous improvement of student performance, and to ensure that all students succeed in reaching academic standards set by the State Board of Education. The annual process of developing, reviewing, and updating the SPSA includes a comprehensive review of data and the development of research based instructional actions necessary to achieve school goals.

Message to Parents: Input from the parent, teacher and student communities are vital to the creation of the SPSA. Additionally, this year, the SSC is tasked with developing the Mission/Vision Statement that will define the framework for creating the school goals. Please make your opinion heard by participating in upcoming surveys and meetings. Speak with your children/students about what is important to them at their school so that they can be prepared to discuss at relevant assemblies. Communicate with the Principal or SSC Chair on an ad hoc basis.

Upcoming Dates: Parent online survey (Feb 9-19, 2018), Principal Meeting to convey results from surveys (Feb 21, 2018), Next SSC Meeting Date (Mar. 7, 2018).
