2017-2018 Immunization Requirement Information

General Immunization Information:

As of January 2016, California Law requires that all children show proof of vaccination against diseases listed in Health and Safety Code 120325 prior to attending public or private school. Due to enactment of SB 277 parents/guardians of students in California schools and childcare facilities are no longer permitted to submit exemptions to required vaccines, based on their personal or religious beliefs regarding vaccines.

Any pupil seeking admission to a given public or private elementary or secondary school, who lacks documentation of having received all the required vaccine doses against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DPT/Tdap), measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B and varicella (chicken pox), and has not obtained a permanent or temporary medical exemption, shall not be allowed admission until immunization requirements have been met.

7th grade Specific Information:

California law (SB 277) requires all students entering into the 7th grade to have proof of a Tdap booster and second MMR before starting school. Under SB 277, exemptions based on personal and religious beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into school in California. Vaccines required for entry into school include polio, MMR, chicken pox and primary series for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, and including the 7th grade requirement for Tdap and 2 doses of MMR. Personal belief exemptions on file for a child already attending school in California are no longer valid for the child entering 7th grade. Medical exemptions that are written by a licensed physician (MD or DO) are still permitted.

Please call your healthcare provider to check that your current 6th grade student has had these vaccines and if not, schedule a visit.

TK/Kindergarten Specific Information:

California schools are required to check immunization records for all new student admissions at Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten, students must be up to date on their immunizations to attend school. To attend school, your child’s immunization record must show the date for each required shot, or if your child has not received all required shots, call your doctor now for an appointment. If a licensed physician (MD or DO) determines vaccines should not be given to your child because of medical reasons, submit a written exemption for the missing shot(s), including the duration of the medical exemption. A personal or religious beliefs exemption is no longer an option for entry into school.

Polio: 4 doses (3 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday)
DTP/DTaP/DT: 5 doses (4 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday)
