Mary Ann Valles Named CVHS Principal
On Thursday evening, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Education appointed Mary Ann Valles as principal of Castro Valley High School effective July 1.
On Thursday evening, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board
of Education appointed Mary Ann Valles as principal of Castro Valley
High School effective July 1. Ms. Valles will replace Pete
Alvarez who has accepted a principalship in Colorado.
Mary Ann has served as principal of Bancroft Middle School since
2003. Previously she served as the co-principal of Berkeley High
School, a school of 3000 students, for two years as well as a year as
an assistant principal at the school. Other administrative and
teaching positions include:
- Supervisor of Curriculum and Technology, San Francisco USD
- Teacher on Special Assignment, Curriculum Improvement and Professional Development, San Francisco USD
- Head Counselor, Burton Academic High School, San Francisco USD
- Teacher, Roosevelt High School, Los Angeles USD
Mary Ann is consistently described by students, staff, and parents
as a caring, hard-working, knowledgeable educator who brings a true
passion to her work. She has demonstrated excellent knowledge of
curriculum and instruction, culturally and linguistically relevant
teaching, professional development, educational technology, special
education, and parent outreach. She has outstanding interpersonal
skills with expertise in conflict mediation and resolution. She is
bilingual in Spanish.
Mary Ann holds Master degrees in Counseling and Educational
Administration from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in
Psychology from CSU Los Angeles.
Board President Janice Friesen stated, "Castro Valley is very fortunate
to hire an experienced principal who is fully committed to the
district's goal of closing the achievement gap and has the hands-on
experience to achieve this goal. The board looks forward to
working with Mary Ann."
Superintendent Jim Negri noted, "Everyone we spoke with
concerning Mary Ann highlighted the same outstanding qualities
time after time. Those qualities will make Mary Ann successful at
Castro Valley High School."
The Castro Valley Unified School District is very pleased to welcome
Mary Ann to our community and is confident she possesses the
professional skills and personal qualities to build upon the tradition
of excellence at Castro Valley High School.
