Child Nutrition
Welcome
from Child Nutrition!
On behalf of the entire Child Nutrition staff, we want to welcome every CVUSD student to the 2011-2012 school year. We hope that everyone has enjoyed the summer break and returns to school ready to explore what the new year has in store for all of us.
Please remember that it is very important to eat a good breakfast and lunch every day . . . and each school cafeteria is open and available to all students on every school day.
For those elementary schools with an early dismissal on Wednesdays or Fridays, the cafeteria is open and lunch is ready and waiting for you. Please stop in and have lunch with us before leaving campus for the day – in fact, Mom and Dad are welcome to come in and have lunch with us too! Click here for current school menus and pricing.
The POS System
The district completed the implementation of the NutriKids POS system in the Fall of 2010 and all schools are online. With the POS system, the district has moved away from a paper-driven system that relies on manual student rosters and lunch tickets to an electronic system that used an electronic database and electronic registers.
How the POS System Works
The new cafeteria system includes touch-screen POS terminals (computers) that communicate electronically with the central Child Nutrition database. Students ‘purchase’ their meal at the POS terminal much like a purchase is processed at a store.
Students are identified in the system by means of their 5-digit student ID number, either scanned from the ID card or entered manually on a pin-pad. Once identified, the student record is displayed on screen, including the student’s picture and account meal balance.
Students can pay for their meal daily with cash or funds can be pre-paid into the student meal account and the cost of meals or food items are then deducted from the account balance.
Student eligibility for free and reduced-price meals is linked electronically to the POS terminal and those transactions are processed in the same manner as for the full-pay students. As always, eligibility for the free and reduced-price meals is invisible to students and that information is only available to cafeteria staff.
Prepayment of Meals
Prepayment of meals is now made by placing funds in a student meal account rather than purchasing meal tickets. Prepayment may be made in several ways:
- Cash or check sent in to the school cafeteria to be placed on account. If sending in a check, please note the student’s name and ID number in the lower left corner of the check.
- Online at www.MyNutriKids.com
With the POS system, the prepayment is loaded into the student’s account and helps to take the burden of handling cash, or a cash equivalent like a lunch ticket, out of the student’s hands. Please note that prepaid funds do NOT reside on the student ID card (like a gift card) and once the funds are deposited with the District, there is no risk of loss.
On-Line Prepayment Option
The MyNutriKids.com on-line information system provides parents with a fast, easy and secure method to add money to a student’s school meal account using a credit, debit card or a PayPal account. In addition to the on-line payment feature, parents may also check a student’s current school meal account balance and see the student’s recent transaction history (including the student’s meal choices) via the MyNutriKids.com account. Features of this service include:
- The 5-digit student ID number is required to add each student to a parent’s MyNutriKids.com account.
- More than one student can be added to a parent’s account.
- There is a flat fee of $1.75 per total transaction when depositing funds on student accounts.
Please note that parents do not have to utilize the on-line payment feature to setup a MyNutriKids.com account and utilize the other features offered there.
National School Lunch Free and Reduce-price Meal Application
Parents must submit a new application for the National School Lunch program every year. Temporary eligibility will carry forward from the previous school year for a period not to exceed 45 days or until the new application is received/processed for the new school year.
In order to expedite and simplify the application process for the 2011-2012 National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for students in the Castro Valley Unified School District, we are requesting that parents apply online. Please use the following internet address to apply: https://rocketscan.cv.k12.ca.us
The site is live although there is a message saying that we are in test mode. You can access the application process by checking the "I have read the above and agree" box and click on the "start" button. After you have completed and submitted the on-line application, it will transmit to us electronically.
