Character Education Program

 

The Castro Valley Character Education Program is a Partnership of the Castro Valley Unified School District and the community of Castro Valley to join together to fortify the lives of our young people.

The monthly character education traits are coordinated with the Soul Shoppe Elementary Peace Program which is used in all elementary schools, and Project Wisdom which is used in the middle schools in the Castro Valley Unified School District.  The traits are as follows:
 
The Character Education Traits:

  • Respect – Show respect for yourself, for others, and for your environment. Be considerate of the feelings of others.  Appreciate those who are different and use manners.  (August, September)
  • Responsibility - Use good judgment.  Do the right thing, be reliable, persevere, and keep on trying.  Use self-control, and have self-disciple.  Be accountable for your choices and think before you act – consider the consequences. (October)
  • Caring/Compassion – Show empathy, caring and kindness.  Help each other, express gratitude and forgive others.   (November/ December) 
  • Positive Attitude – Choose to be optimistic and cheerful.  Look at how things can be done, not why they can't be done.  Be a good sport. (January)
  • Honesty – Be truthful in your speech and behavior.  Build a good reputation. Do not cheat.  Have integrity and be trustworthy. (February)
  • Cooperation – The ability to work well with others to get things done.  Being a team player and communicating effectively so everyone can get along.  (March)
  • Do Your Best/Perseverance – Try your hardest.  Practice so that you will improve. (April)
  • Wise Choices – Use your ability to choose and act with sound judgment. (May, June)


*Signs will be distributed in the community to support these traits in partnership with the Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Castro Valley Rotary Club

Purpose:  Our purpose is for all of the schools in the District to work together, knowing that there will be a reciprocal return on our investment in current students, future generations, and society. Together we can teach young people to:

  • Develop positive self-esteem as a product of responsible behavior
  • Assume responsibility for their actions
  • Know "right" from "wrong"
  • Respect the rights of others
  • Maximize their use of time and talents
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Develop decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Use self-discipline to achieve goals
  • Resist negative peer pressure
  • Decrease violence, bullying and teasing, creating a safe learning environment
