Castro Valley Unified School District

All Means All

Reminder: Free Breakfast & Lunch Guidelines for Students

Posted Date: 9/22/25 (2:51 PM)

Dear Families,

Our district participates in the Universal Meals Program, which provides one nutritionally adequate breakfast and one lunch at no charge to all students each school day. This program is a valuable resource that helps ensure every student is well-nourished and ready to learn.  The meals provided through this program meet or exceed all federal and state nutritional standards.

It is important for families to understand the program’s guidelines regarding additional meals:

  • Each student is entitled to one free breakfast and one free lunch per day.

  • If a student eats breakfast before school and then comes through the line again during “Second Chance Breakfast” (aka snack), that additional meal is not free and will be charged to their account.

  • Second meals are available for purchase as follows:

    • Second Breakfast: $3.46

    • Second Lunch: $5.69

We encourage families to remind their students of this policy to avoid unexpected charges.

Managing Your Student’s Meal Account
You can monitor your student’s account balance and add funds online at SchoolCafe. To create an account with SchoolCafe, go to SchoolCafe and click on create a new account.

We encourage all families to take advantage of the universal free breakfast and lunch program. Our Child Nutrition team is committed to providing healthy, delicious meals that support student success.

If you have any questions, please contact the Child Nutrition Department at 510-537-3000 ext. 7015 or childnutrition@cv.k12.ca.us.
