Background:

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors, and risk behaviors in the nation. Across California, the CHKS has led to a better understanding of the relationship between students' health behaviors and academic performance, and is frequently cited by state policymakers and the media as a critical component of school improvement efforts to help guide the development of more effective health, prevention, and youth development programs. It provides a means to confidentially obtain data on student knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the topics it covers.

The CHKS is part of the California School Climate and Health Learning Surveys (CalSCHLS) system, which was created by the California Department of Education (CDE) in 1997 to efficiently and cost-effectively provide school districts and their partner communities with quality local data which can be used to improve student academic performance and social-emotional, behavioral, and physical health of all youth. It assesses key indicators linked to success in school, career, and life. The majority of districts in California now use CalSCHLS data as Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) indicators.

The CalSCHLS system includes:

All three surveys were developed by WestEd with the help of Duerr Evaluation Resources and expert advisory committees of educators, researchers, and practitioners. The staff and parent surveys were added to CHKS to address the needs of districts for data on school working conditions, parent involvement, and to enable comparison of staff and parent perspectives to student self-reports. It is an ideal tool for collecting data on local priorities as part of a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

2023-2024 CalSCHLS Surveys in Castro Valley USD :

For the 2023-2024 school year, Castro Valley Unified School District will administer all three surveys (Parent/Guardian, Staff, and Student). Each school will schedule their own administration dates and times for their surveys. All surveys are anonymous and are for the use of the district and school. Participation is voluntary, but encouraged as the information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning. Please note that while all students and all staff of each respective school are surveyed, only students in grades 5, 7, 9, 11, and students in alternative programs are surveyed.
