Middle School Mathematics Materials Adoption Preview

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Castro Valley Unified School District is in the process of adopting new middle school (grades 6-8) Mathematics materials to align with the new California Standards.  Administrators and teachers have been working together to select and evaluate new materials since last spring.

From December 21, 2018 - January 22, 2019, the Castro Valley community is invited to preview new grades 6-8 Mathematics instructional materials proposed for district adoption. All pilot materials are viewable at the District Office at 4400 Alma Avenue, Educational Services office from 8:00AM and 4:00PM, Monday through Friday. The materials will not be available for check out.

In April of this year, a “pre-pilot” committee, made up of teachers from each grade level at each school (Canyon Middle School and Creekside Middle School) met to examine the Mathematics materials that had been approved by the state Board of Education. After conducting a needs assessment of our current instructional materials and thoroughly vetting the available programs, the pre-pilot committee chose two programs to pilot from August 2018-December 2018. Nearly all of the teachers at each site received training and support from the publishers of the instructional materials and the Teacher on Special Assignment for Secondary Mathematics throughout the length of the pilot. Students were also surveyed to gather their opinions about the two instructional programs under consideration. At this time, we are also asking for community input to help inform the decision and to select the program that will be the best fit for CVUSD.
