Health & Safety: Communicable Diseases

CVUSD will continue to follow public health K-12 guidance for COVID-19 risk mitigation during the 2023-2024 school year. We encourage parents/caregivers and staff to read through this plan and become familiar with the district’s safety protocols. This plan will be updated during the school year, especially when/if public health guidance changes.

Testing Recommendations
  • CDPH no longer recommends testing for all close contacts and instead recommends testing only for:
    • All people with new COVID-19 symptoms.
    • Close contacts who are at higher risk of severe disease or who have contact with people who are at higher risk of severe disease.
  • Regardless of CDPH recommendations, employers must continue to make COVID-19 testing available at no cost and during paid time to all employees with a close contact, except for asymptomatic employees who recently recovered from COVID-19.

What if my student has tested positive for COVID-19?
IMPORTANT
: Notify your school of the positive test result. Call your school’s attendance line.
Isolation requirements for positive cases:
  • For COVID-19 cases with symptoms, with or without fever, students/staff may return if:
    • 24 hours have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, AND
    • their symptoms are mild and improving.
  • For COVID-19 cases with no symptoms, there is no period of isolation or exclusion. If symptoms develop, the criteria above will apply.

  • Face coverings following a COVID-19 diagnosis (with or without symptoms) are:
    • Recommended for students through day 10, or following two sequential negative tests at least one day apart. Day 0 is symptom onset date or positive test date.
    • Required for employees through day 10 per Cal/OSHA guidance for workplaces. Day 0 is symptom onset date or positive test date.

Exposure Notifications

Per California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance, parents/caregivers will not receive routine close contact notifications during the 2023-2024 school year.  CVUSD will consider providing a general notification to the entire school community when many in the community may currently have COVID-19 and be infectious to others. This communication can alert all to the increased potential of being exposed to COVID-19 due to a rise in cases among school and community members, and remind all to monitor for symptoms and get tested.

CVUSD will continue to follow Cal/OSHA notification requirements for staff who are exposed to COVID-19 cases at CVUSD, including direct notification of exposures, case notifications to all sites, and outbreak notifications to the exposed staff members and all staff members at a facility.

Masking

masking

CVUSD will align with applicable Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) and California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) employer-specific guidance on face coverings for students, staff and visitors to CVUSD facilities.

The District will have masks available for any student or staff seeking one, at all CVUSD schools and facilities. CVUSD will follow any CDPH or ACPHD masking order.

Stay home if you’re not feeling well & Test
Stay home if you're feeling sick! There are a lot of viruses going around, and you don’t want to spread them, even if your illness is not COVID.

Please do not send your child to school with any symptoms (Fever or chills, Cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Muscle or body aches, Headache, New loss of taste or smell, Sore throat, Congestion or runny nose, Nausea or vomiting, or Diarrhea), regardless of their COVID test results. Students must be fever/vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of medications before returning to school for non-COVID-related illnesses. If students are too unwell to learn or be successful in the classroom, please keep them home to rest and recover. Please always be sure to call your student’s school if you are keeping them home for illness.
